In ancient Greek "Galatea" means "she who is milky white". In the 18th century the name was given to the ivory statue carved by Pygmalion, which came to life after the artist fell in love with her and prayed to Venus that she be changed into a real woman.
Many of my paintings feature portraits or representations of women. The sitter engages the viewer’s with her own direct gaze that plays with the roles of subject and object. The title of this painting encourages us to go further with this attribution and reversal of roles.

Mark Stewart-Jones is organising an art event with the aim of generating funds for the homeless in his nearby town of Canterbury. The event will include an art exhibition with work for sale by Sophie Stewart-Jones (click here to see examples of Sophie's work : http://dreamsonpaper.com/ ). I've also agreed to donate some of my Sony Reader drawings, which may find resonance. More details to be posted shortly.
