In yesterday's post, I mentioned how I've been thinking again about the work of Marie Laurencin. I've also been looking at paintings by the German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, in particular this portrait:

Marie Laurencin is one of my favourite artists and I often find myself thinking about her work when I am painting.

I've just found this lovely portrait of Laurencin on a French blog and was struck by how much she looks like her paintings.

Coincidently, I have been looking at the work by the American printmaker and illustrator Charley Harper (1922 - 2007). Whilst doing a Google image search on his work I came across some work by another printmaker: John W Golden.

I love this print and the cat's name is so right ! I have my own portrait of one of our cats (Nobby) now hanging in the sitting room at home:

The title of this painting refers to a lovely poem by Baudelaire, which I included in an earlier post, now in the archive (post dated Friday 24th September 2010). Don't forget to check the Archive to see lots more paintings. To do this, scroll down to the bottom of the page and follow the links.

The Black Feathered Hat

(Above) The Black Feathered Hat

April 2011
Mixed media (Faber Castel Albrecht Durer watercolour crayons, Windsor & Newton Indian ink, Windsor & Newton Calli calligraphic ink, Daler Rowney FW acrylic ink, Caran d'ache Neocolour II water-soluble wax crayons) on 100% cotton rag, acid-free paper (200g).

I've developed this painting from a drawing (below) done in response to a thumbnail photograph that I saw in an Internet report about Ladies' Day at Aintree. The lady in the picture was wearing a pink wrap around dress or shawl of somekind, but really the palette was triggered by my coincidently enjoying the sight of a cherry tree this morning that is blossom behind the back of the house. The colour of the blossom looks wonderful against the clear blue skies that we have had with a weekend of glorious spring weather.

I've developed this painting from a drawing (below) that I did using the Handwriting app of my Sony Reader after a photograph of Leslie Caron that I found on the Internet. The photograph was in black and white but when I came to do the painting I wanted to try a summer / yellow palette.

(Below) A Kentucky Derby
April 2011
10cm x  11cm
An original drawing produced using the Handwriting app, stylus and tactile screen of the Sony Reader, printed on acid-free paper and hand signed.

I did the drawing immediately above yesterday whilst waiting to start day 3 of a 4 day lithography course at Simon Burder's printmaking studio at the Oaks Park Studios near Croydon. If you are interested in lithography, have a look at Simon's website:

In the meantime, here are my first attempts (with careful guidance from Simon) at drawing on stone.

"Rachel" (above top) is a black and white lithograph which I developed using a drawing (below) that  I did a few weeks' ago, using the Handwriting app of the Sony Reader, of my niece Rachel:

And having tried black and white lithography, I went on to produce this print in colour:

Again, this print picks up from my previous work:
